Our Learning Approach

How children learn — and why it lasts a lifetime.

Behind the calm of a MIMS classroom is a deep and proven approach. We don't fill children with facts; we help them build the focus, character, and capability that everything else in life is built upon.

MIMS (Maria International Montessori School) is an authentic international Montessori school and premium day care in Borupana, Ratmalana, Sri Lanka, for children aged 2½–12.

The method · how children actually learn

Learning the way children are built to learn

More than a century of observation sits behind the Montessori method — and modern child development research keeps confirming it. The principles are simple, and they explain everything we do:

  • The absorbent mind. In the early years, children absorb language, order, and understanding from their surroundings effortlessly. We make those surroundings rich, calm, and worth absorbing.

  • Sensitive periods. Young children pass through windows when they are especially ready to master particular skills. Our guides watch for these moments and meet each child exactly there.

  • The prepared environment. Every material has a purpose and a place. Order in the room becomes order in the mind, and beauty invites care.

  • The guide who observes. Our teachers observe more than they instruct — stepping in to spark, to support, and then to step back, so the child does the real work.

  • The uninterrupted work cycle. A long, unhurried block of time lets children choose work and concentrate deeply — building the focus that is the foundation of all learning.

  • A mixed-age community. Children of mixed ages learn together: the younger inspired by the older, the older deepening their understanding by helping.

We give children freedom — within a calm and beautiful form.

The curriculum areas · in brief

Six worlds, explored in depth

The Montessori curriculum is organised into clear areas — Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Cultural & The World, and Creative Arts — each with beautiful, purposeful materials and its own gentle colour cue at MIMS. We describe these in full on the Montessori Programme page; here, the focus is on the wider learning and character that grow alongside them.

Learning that goes wider

A complete childhood, not just a curriculum

A MIMS education reaches well beyond the core materials. We nurture the whole child — head, hands, and heart:

Science & discovery

Children are natural scientists. We protect and feed that instinct — observing, questioning, experimenting, and exploring the natural world — so curiosity becomes a genuine habit of mind rather than a subject on a timetable.

The arts

Art and craft give children a language beyond words. With real materials and the freedom to create, they explore colour, texture, and form — valuing the process and the joy of making, not just the finished piece.

Music

Singing, rhythm, and listening delight young children and quietly build memory, language, coordination, and confidence. Music threads naturally through our days.

Movement & physical development

In Montessori, movement and learning are inseparable. Purposeful activity refines coordination and control, while active, joyful play builds strong, capable, confident bodies.

Outdoor & nature learning

Time outdoors is a signature of MIMS, not an afterthought. Gardens, natural play, and growing things calm and focus children — and research agrees: nature is one of the finest classrooms there is.

A thoughtful approach to technology

In the early years, the best technology is a child's own hands. We keep screens deliberately minimal and let real, tactile experience lead. Where technology has a place, it is purposeful — and the most valuable tech in your family's life with us is the calm, transparent window we give you into your child's day.

Character & social-emotional growth

Grace and courtesy are taught here as carefully as letters and numbers. Children learn to name their feelings, to wait, to share, to resolve small conflicts, and to treat others with kindness and respect — the social-emotional foundation that shapes a happy, well-adjusted life.

Future-ready skills

The world your child will enter rewards exactly what Montessori builds best: the ability to focus, to think independently, to solve problems, to adapt, to create, and to work well with others. We aren't teaching to today's test — we're building minds ready for a world still being written.

Growing curious minds. Building confident futures.

Come and feel the difference for yourself

The best way to understand MIMS is to stand inside it — to feel the calm, watch the children at work, and meet the people who will care for your child. We warmly invite you to visit. Admissions are open throughout the year, and we would love to welcome your family.
