What is Montessori? In plain language
Montessori can sound mysterious. It isn't. It is simply a way of teaching that trusts children to learn by doing — and gives them everything they need to succeed.

The Montessori curriculum is organised into clear areas of learning. At MIMS, each has its own gentle colour cue — on shelves, signage, and your parent updates — so children, guides, and parents can navigate intuitively.
Sensorial
Children explore the world through their senses, learning to compare, order, and classify — size, shape, colour, sound, texture. This refines perception and lays the groundwork for mathematics and language.
Language
Rich vocabulary, listening, and the joyful early steps toward reading and writing — built on real conversation and experience. Delivered in English, with our wider Sri Lankan languages woven in.
Mathematics
Numbers made concrete. With beautiful hands-on materials, even very young children grasp quantity and operations naturally — moving toward abstract maths with confidence rather than anxiety.
Cultural & The World
Geography, history, the natural sciences — the wider world made wonderful. Children explore where they live, how things grow, and the rich variety of life and cultures around them.

Parents often ask whether a Montessori child will be ready for primary school. The answer, reliably, is yes — and more. What ages is the Montessori programme for?
Our core Montessori programme is for children aged 2½ to 5. For families needing longer hours or care up to age 12, our Day Care programme runs alongside it, to the same standard.
My child has never been to school. Will they settle in?
Almost always, and gently. We plan a calm, gradual settling-in for every new child, with a named guide, a welcome, and plenty of reassurance — for your child and for you. Most children are happily absorbed within their first weeks.
Isn't Montessori very unstructured? Will my child really learn?
It's a common worry, and an understandable one. Montessori offers freedom within a clear structure — children choose their work, but within a carefully prepared environment and the close guidance of trained educators. The deep concentration this produces is exactly how real, lasting learning happens.
Is the programme taught in English?
Yes — MIMS is an English-medium school, which is part of why international and aspirational families choose us. Children also benefit from exposure to our wider Sri Lankan languages within a naturally rich language environment.
How much individual attention will my child get?
A great deal. We keep groups deliberately small and our guides observe each child closely, so learning is tailored to where your child actually is. Being truly known — greeted by name, understood, supported — is central to the MIMS promise.
How will I know how my child is doing?
